It’s Christmas… well nearly

Jason had a busy festive weekend. Friday evening saw the big Christmas Lights switch on in Honley. Congratulations to Ian Gooch and the Holme Valley Business Association for doing the valley proud with the lights in Holmfirth and Honley.

Hundreds braved the squalls to walk round the Honley Christmas street market on Saturday morning with shelter just up the road in Trinity Church for their lovely Christmas Tree Festival.

Then it was Marsden’s turn for their lights switch on with entertainment from the Imbolc fire twirlers. The blue and white Christmas lights in Meltham looked as dazzling as ever on the drive home.

Jason spent an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the 1940s themed Christmas at Taylors Food Store with a festive performance from Honley Male Voice Choir.

Bright Green Energy Show

Jason opened the Bright Green Energy Show at Holmfirth Civic Hall. The show promotes Sustainable Living in the Valleys and had hundreds of visitors.

Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival

Jason joined hundreds of visitors at the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival.

It was the biggest and best yet as local produce and tasty treats were on offer all over the town. Jason judged some of the cooking competitions and helped local baker Greg Christofi make Yorkshire Fat Rascals.

Longley Farm

Jason helped pack yoghurts during a visit to Longley Farm near Holmfirth.

The family owned business employs 140 local people and they sell their yoghurts, cottage cheese and cream products all over the world. Jason discussed milk prices, the influence of the big supermarkets and the role of local food producers with the Longley Farm team and NFU officials.

David Beckham’s Royal Wedding Suit

Jason visited Bower Roebuck & Co textiles in New Mill near Holmfirth; they supplied the cloth for David Beckham’s Royal Wedding suit. They are another local company doing well.

Urban Wildlife Project

Jason brought his week of volunteering to a close with a morning at the Urban Wildlife Project in Thornton Lodge and an afternoon with the youngsters at the Cafe 100 Youth Club in Holmfirth.

Volunteer Week Continues – National Trust and Kirkwood Hospice

Jason spent more time with positive people doing positive things. He had a great morning up at Pule Hill on beautiful Marsden Moor helping National Trust volunteers put up fences to keep the sheep off the A62.

He then spent a busy afternoon helping the wonderful volunteers at the Kirkwood Hospice shop in Holmfirth.

Transport Minister visits Holme Valley

Transport Minister Norman Baker has been in the Holme Valley discussing rural bus services.

Mr Baker met passengers, local Councillors and a Metro transport official to discuss bus service provision in the valleys. The Quality Contracts Scheme and the Local Sustainable Transport Fund were also on the agenda.

Pupils, a Public Meeting, a Petition and Plenty of Pianos

Jason was singing Beatles songs on one of the outdoor pianos in Holmfirth to launch the Holmfirth Arts Festival this weekend:

Jason joined Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell with a joint stand at another successful Honley Show. Jason helped collect hundreds of more signatures on the petition to save Yorkshire’s Children’s Heart Surgery Unit at the LGI:

A packed public meeting at the Adult Education Centre allowed constituents to question the Vice Principal of Kirklees College about the decision to close the centre:

Jason ended up Chairing the meeting as passions were running high. A further meeting will be held at Holmfirth Civic Centre.

He also visited Lydgate Special School last Friday. He had met many of the pupils at the Sharing Memories event earlier in the year:
