The home, which is run by Ideal Care Homes, looks after 64 residents in a modern and stimulating setting. During Jason’s visit, a donkey was brought over to meet the residents.

I’ve had another busy and fascinating week. I’ve been out and about in Golcar, Linthwaite, Marsden, Slaithwaite, Netherton, Holmfirth, Lindley, Outlane, Holmbridge and of course Honley. On Thursday I met pensioners rightly angry at cuts to bus services which are a vital lifeline for them to local shops and the local hospital. The residents didn’t even know they were losing the services. Myself and Lindley Cllr Tony Brice are fighting all the way, with the backing of Metro, to get First to reinstate the axed services.

I’m back home in Yorkshire after a busy week at the Conservative party Conference in sunny Manchester – okay, it did rain Tuesday, and a bit on Wednesday. Here are my conference Top Ten moments:

1. David Cameron’s closing speech. We will need to confront Britain’s culture of irresponsibility, and that will be hard to take for many people. We will have to tear down Labour’s big government bureaucracy.

2. Pledges to keep pensioner bus passes, pensioner TV licences and the winter fuel allowance whilst linking pensions to earnings.
3. Pledges to keep Sure Start centres and child benefit payments.
4. Bono thanking the Conservatives for promising to fight world poverty.
5. Signing up to the Royal British Legion campaign to support our Armes Forces, their families and veterans.
6. Meeting Yorkshire Water bigwigs to discuss flooding, water meters and local reservoirs.
7. Speaking in the transport debate about local bus service cuts, vandalism at Slaithwaite railway station and free pensioner bus passes.
8. George Osborne safeguarding 100,000 front-line jobs.
9. Meeting up with local Scouts to campaign against the “Rain Tax” – they allow girls to join now but boys can’t be in the Guides!
10. More policy announcements than you can shake a copy of The Sun at.

On the doorstep I’d had a fleeting glimpse of an extraordinary life and today, over tea and cherry bakewells, the stories flowed.

Eva was based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and clearly remembers the Lancaster bombers taking off for the Dambusters raid. Group Captain Guy Gibson was a colleague. From Dunkirk to D Day the two hours flew by but the best story was saved for last. On a cross country troop train Mrs R, as Eva was affectionately known by the troops, was summoned to provide a tray of refreshments for a VIP passenger. After rustling up egg and chips with a pot of tea Eva was shepherded into the compartment of non other than Winston Churchill.

Finally, we should all remember that the slow pensioner fumbling for coins at the supermarket checkout or the stumbling OAP taking their time to get onto the bus during a rainstorm may well have once risked their lives for our country and our freedoms. Not my words, Eva’s as I left this lunchtime. You’re right Eva, you’re so right. Bless you.
