It’s been a week of contrasting birthday emotions. I’ve been celebrating a couple of family birthdays whilst earlier in the week should have been the first birthday of Maisie Bates. A year ago Maisie’s Mum Alanna had to be transferred to Calderdale for an emergency delivery. Living in Golcar, Alanna should have gone to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary had their consultant led unit not closed a few months earlier. During the transfer to Halifax Maisie lost oxygen to her brain and suffered severe brain damage. Just 2 days later Alanna and her partner Glynn had to make the heart breaking decision to turn off Maisie’s life support. Alanna and Glynn have shown great bravery, fortitude and determination in the past 12 months and I was honoured to join them and close friends for a party to remember Maisie on what should have been her first birthday.

We firmly believe specialist maternity services should be reinstated at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and have set up the MOMS Move Our Maternity Services back to Huddersfield campaign.
