The people have spoken and 17,410,742 voted for the UK to leave the European Union. There were no constituency counts but Kirklees voted 55-45 in favour of leaving the European Union.
I said at the start of the campaign I would respect the result whatever it turned out to be, and the people have spoken. The Prime Minister, Jeremy Corbyn and all the other party leaders have accepted the result and once a new Prime Minister is in place this autumn negotiations will begin for our calm and measured withdrawal from the EU. The Referendum Bill contained no rules on turnout or winning margins, and the result will stand.
It is important now that local MPs unite and we work together to shape a positive future for our nation outside of the EU club as we look to the rest of the world. We must also work together to reject hatred and intolerance.
