Jason has joined a powerful cross party group of MPs calling for a long term plan to address NHS and Social Care funding and challenges. The group includes Frank Field MP (Labour Chair of DWP Select Cmtee) Caroline Flint MP (Labour) Liz Kendall (Labour former Shadow Health Minister) Meg Hillier MP (Labour Chair of Public Accounts Cmtee) Ivan Lewis (Labour) Dr Sarah Wollaston (Conservative Chair of Health Select Cmtee) Dr Dan Poulter (Conservative former Health Minister) Hugo Swire (Conservative) Jeremy Lefroy (Conservative) Dr Andrew Murison (Conservative) Norman Lamb (Lib Dem former Health Minister) Tom Brake (Lib Dem former Deputy Leader of the House). A small delegation met the PM and Health Secretary this afternoon for a constructive meeting where Number 10 agreed to further talks.
Successive governments have failed to bite the bullet and put together a long term plan to address social care and NHS funding. It instead has been a political football for far too long. We are all thankfully living longer due to advances in medicine but this extra care is expensive to provide. We have joined together to launch a campaign to encourage the Government to establish a cross-party NHS and Care Convention to examine the future funding requirements of these cherished services and agree a new, long-term settlement to guarantee their sustainability for future generations and to ensure that this country has one of the best health and care systems in the world.
